Leadership V Management

Leadership and management are different, but may have a slight overlap. Leadership is about inspiring and influencing, where as management is more the transactional approach, where you are directing and controlling someone to achieve something. A leader may inspire, nurture and guide, they have passion and creative vision, and their focus may be on sharing and communicating information, not dictating what someone should do. Management is a more transactional approach, telling someone what they need to do and how they need to do it in order to get things done. They ensure that there are processes in place, coordinating and organising activities in order to achieve objectives.

A leader needs to remain agile and be adaptable to change, and develop the skills they need in order to manage during different situations.

What type of Leader do you want to be?

A leadership style is a leader’s method of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people.

  • Authoritarian Leadership.
  • Participative Leadership.
  • Delegative Leadership.
  • Transactional Leadership.
  • Transformational Leadership

Transformational Leadership
This leadership style is my favourite and the one that is closest to my heart, as this is how I believe that leaders should lead. It is a process where you are raising people to higher levels through motivation and morality. Integrity is at the forefront of this leadership style, along with the ability to motivate and inspire people to achieve the company’s vision. In order to be successful with this style of leadership you need to be able to adapt your style to what motivates each individual, choosing the best method for success. In my experience of using this style of leadership I used to adapt my style depending on what motivates the individual and gets the best out of them in terms of performance. I found it to be a longer-term approach but built strong and effective teams. Everyone has the same opportunity to grow whether you are a sales adviser or a manager.

The process that you can use to become a transformational leader is:
Step 1
Create inspiring visions of the future.
Step 2
Motivate people in to delivering and buying in to the vision.
Step 3
Managing and overseeing the delivery of the vision
Step 4
Building relationships that are strong and based on trust with your people.
